Gutmann named AAAS fellow

Myron Gutmann, ICPSR's director from 2001 to 2009, has been elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Gutmann was one of seven members named as fellows in November from the AAAS Section on Social, Economic and Political Sciences. In all, 539 members were elected as fellows.

Gutmann oversaw a period of dramatic growth at ICPSR in the 2000s. The size of the staff roughly doubled during his tenure, grant funding increased from $3.2 million annually to $8.1 million, and the number of members boomed from about 250 to nearly 700.

Gutmann is midway through a four-year term as head of the National Science Foundation's Social, Behavioral and Economics Directorate. He continues to be a research professor at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research (at ICPSR and the Population Studies Center), and professor of history at U-M's School of Information.

As part of ICPSR's commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Gutmann recorded video interviews on *his time as director*, and the *consortium's growth*.

Gutmann and the other AAAS fellows will be recognized at the annual AAAS membership meeting scheduled for February 2012 in Vancouver, B.C. AAAS is a global non-profit serving 10 million individuals with the goal of advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people, and is the publisher of Science, the largest paid-circulation peer reviewed general science magazine in the world.

"60 Minutes" Features NIJ-Funded Study Archived at NACJD

On November 13, 2011, "60 Minutes" aired a segment featuring Geoffrey Alpert, one of the principal investigators of a recent NIJ-funded study archived at NACJD entitled the "Multi-Method Evaluation of Police Use of Force Outcomes: Cities, Counties, and National, 1998-2007 [United States]" (ICPSR 25781). The purpose of the study was to investigate how and why injuries occur to police and citizens during use of force events. The data collection is available to the research community through the NACJD Web site.
