IOM Report on LGBT Health available for free download

The Institute of Medicine's recent report, "The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding" is now available for free download. The IOM also provides brief summaries, audio, and the opportunity to purchase a hard copy of the report here.

Mexican Americans' social mobility and experiences

The RCMD announces the release of The Mexican American Study Project II (MASP II), 1998-2000 (ICPSR 28481). In an original study conducted in 1965, Leo Grebler, Joan Moore, and Ralph Guzman surveyed Mexican Americans in San Antonio, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. The new survey was used to test hypotheses related to Mexican Americans' social mobility, their ethnic identity and behavior, their experiences with discrimination, and the relationship between socioeconomic status and ethnic identity. http://dx.doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR28481

Puerto Rico's Padrones, 1779-1802

The RCMD would like to announce the release of Puerto Rico's Padrones, 1779-1802 (ICPSR 30262). The padrones were born of a 1776 Royal Order requesting viceroys and executives of Capitanías Generales and Gobernaciones, such as Puerto Rico, to prepare reports on population, broken down by social status, race, and sex. The focus was the civilian population and, therefore, excludes the regular army troops. The series reports the population of Whites, Indians, free Mulattoes, free Blacks, Mulatto slaves and Black slaves for each of 30 partidos in all 23 years (producing a total of 690 observations). http://dx.doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR30262

Kinder Houston Area Survey Updated

The Kinder Houston Area Survey (ICPSR 20428) has been updated to include data through 2010. The Kinder Houston Area Survey is a longitudinal study that began in May 1982 after Houston, Texas, recovered from the recession of the mid-1980s. The overall purpose of this research was to measure systematically the public responses to the new economic, educational, and environmental challenges, and to make the findings of this continuing project readily available to civic and business leaders, to the general public, and to research scholars. http://dx.doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR20428

Changes to authentication

Beginning Wednesday, May 18, ICPSR users will have additional options for logging in to ICPSR. Visitors wishing to download data or access other ICPSR functions that require authentication will be able to use their Google or Facebook account.

The new login screen will look like this:

Benefits of making third party authentication available:

  • Users will not have to remember yet another login/password combination.
  • If users are logged into their Google or Facebook account and then go to ICPSR, they will already be logged in.

Changes to authentication

As of Wednesday, May 18, SAMHDA users are no longer be required to log in to the Web site to download data or perform online analyses. Visitors will still need to agree to terms of use, but the log in requirement has been removed to better align with Federal privacy guidelines.

Streamlined Access to Data

SAMHDA has streamlined the process for downloading and analyzing data online. Previously, anonymous login as a guest or login using an ICPSR MyData account were required to access SAMHDA data. Now, users are taken directly to the Terms of Use page after selecting a study for download or online analysis.

ICPSR internship selections announced

We are pleased to announce the 7th season of the ICPSR Summer Internship Program for undergraduates. The Internship is a very popular program and this year we received about 100 applications and will be supporting four interns in the following topical archives: Child Care and Early Education Research Connections (CCEERC), Data Sharing for Demographic Research (DSDR), Resource Center for Minority Data (RCMD), and National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD).

The Interns will spend ten weeks at ICPSR from June 6 to August 12 during which they will:

  • Complete a research project resulting in conference-ready posters
  • Gain experience processing data and learn statistical programs
  • Attend graduate level courses in the Summer Program
  • Participate in a Lunch and Lecture series

The objective of the Summer Internship Program is to support ICPSR’s strategic focus on undergraduates by promoting the effective use of social science research data. We will encourage the interns to pursue graduate studies or a career in the social or behavioral sciences. With luck, they will be future data depositors, summer program instructors, Official Representatives, or even members of the Council. We currently have thirty-one alumni of the Internship Program and they are currently attending graduate school or have begun a career in a social science.

The Internship Program will be managed by Abayomi Israel, with John Garcia of the Resource Center for Minority Data and Lynette Hoelter of Instructional Resources providing guidance and support as Research Program Mentors. Each Intern will be assigned an experienced Research Technician as their Data Processing Mentor. In addition, the interns will have the opportunity to receive additional graduate school advice and support on their research projects from the ICPSR Faculty.

We are very pleased to announce that the following students have been selected for the 2011 Summer Internship Program:

Jasmine Coleman, Drew University, Madison, NJ – Assigned to CCEERC (Christopher Greene - Processing Mentor)
Jasmine is a Psychology major graduating in 2013 with an interest in pursuing a graduate degree in clinical child psychology. Specifically, she is interested in the ways in which children are affected by parents with substance abuse problems. During the 2011 Spring Semester, Jasmine worked as a Research Assistant and Student Recitation Instructor while serving on numerous executive boards on campus and a member of the Emerging Leaders Program. As a sophomore, Jasmine has completed the required research methods sequence at her university and is looking forward to attending the ICPSR Summer Program courses in preparation for her Honors Thesis. Jasmine has a strong interest in research, and, this summer she looks forward to gaining a better understanding of data processing, working with other students that have a research interest, engaging in the research dialogue with persons from multiple perspectives, and sharing her research findings with students and faculty through the poster sessions. Jasmine enjoys movies, spending time with friends, and staying busy participating in a number of campus organizations.

Toby Flint, Hasting College, Hastings, NE – Assigned to DSDR (Kathryn Frania - Processing Mentor)
Toby is a Political Science and Economics double major and a Mathematics and History double minor graduating in 2012. After graduation, Toby plans to pursue a PhD in Political Science with an emphasis in Comparative Politics with a long-term career goal of teaching and researching. A subject that is of specific interest to him is that of quantitative comparative politics, especially in regards to the Middle East. He has worked with the World Values Survey and is interested in learning about similar datasets. Toby is interested in researching democratization theories, specifically that of partial democracies. Toby is very interested in having an opportunity to attend advanced classes in the Summer Program in preparation for graduate school. He currently serves as the Social Sciences Senator of his college and a Certified Peer Educator (BACCHUS) while being a member of the Hastings varsity tennis team. Toby is looking forward to networking with professors, staff, and undergraduates who are similarly interested in quantitative analysis.

Quentin Karpilow, Kenyon College, Gambier, OH – Assigned to NACJD (Justin Noble - Processing Mentor)
Quentin is an Economics and Mathematics double major graduating in May 2012 with a concentration in Statistics. He plans to attend graduate school in either Economics or Political Science with the long term goal of pursuing a career in academia. Quentin’s academic interests include immigrant selectivity, migrant networks, immigrant education, and the impact of remittance flows on the socio-economic development of origin communities. In addition, his 2011 paper examining how the criminalization of U.S immigration law has impacted media representations of the transnational gang (Mara Salvatruha) has been selected for the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. He looks forwards to the hands-on data management experience that the ICPSR Summer Internship can grant him and attendance in the Summer Program. Quentin has worked as a Spanish translator, Residential Advisor, and statistics tutor. He co-founded the student run newspaper Kenyon Global News. In his free time, Quentin enjoys being a member of a jazz band and he has an interest in a myriad of sports.

Emmi Obara, Reed College, Portland, OR – Assigned to RCMD (Abay Israel - Processing Mentor)
Emmi is a Sociology major graduating in May 2012 with an interest in Race, Ethnicity and immigration issues. She is interested in pursuing her social science interest and is hopeful that this internship will provide her more exposure to career possibilities. Emmi has served as a mentor to new international students to support their cultural, social, and academic transition to the college. Recently, Emmi spent two semesters at the Université de Rennes II in France, currently serves as a French tutor at her college, and worked as a Japanese to English translator. Emmi is interested in attending introductory statistical courses in the Summer Program to provide additional quantitative background. She has worked with the General Social Science and Add Health data sets and sees her summer at ICPSR as a way to advance her quantitative research method abilities. Emmi is a long distance runner and will complete a marathon just prior to her arrival to ICPSR and she enjoys cooking, specifically baking.

A reminder about proxy servers

ICPSR does not support proxy servers. Please do not use proxy servers when directing users to our site. Because our Web site uses cookies to manage authentication, the intrusion of a proxy server can prevent users from successfully logging in and downloading data. Links to ICPSR should point to:

Or anything along those lines.

Over the past few months, we've received reports of users unable to login; these problems have almost entirely been due to access via a proxy server, and have been resolved by sending the users directly to the ICPSR Web site.

We'd also like to point out that although ICPSR uses IP-based authentication, we also flag accounts as being part of the consortium. Flagged accounts can download from anywhere for six months after their last on-campus login. Thus proxy servers are not needed for off-campus access. End users merely need to log on from a campus computer once per semester.

Proxy servers are also unnecessary for reporting campus utilization of ICPSR resources. ICPSR provide its own reporting utilities on the OR site, and our utilities include off-campus downloads in the reports.

If you have a link to ICPSR on your Web site that directs users through a proxy server, please update the link to go directly to ICPSR, so that your users will be able to successfully download data.

Update on last year's ICPSR interns

News from last year’s ICPSR interns:

Stephanie Jaczkowski will be spending this summer as an intern with the National Taxpayer’s Union in Washington, DC. She will return to Central Michigan in the fall for her senior year. Stephanie presented her ICPSR poster at the Southern Political Science Association meetings.

Darys Kriegel will soon be heading to the University of Georgia to begin a Ph.D. program in sociology and social psychology, where he hopes to pursue his interest in military sociology. He presented his poster at the annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society.

Krissia Martinez put her ICPSR training to work this year as a member of a UC-Santa Cruz research group surveying residents of Okinawa, Japan’s military base. She is also interning at a non-profit organization for gang prevention where she works with youth in Juvenile Hall and on probation. She is hoping for an internship at Phillips Academy in Massachusetts this summer but will pursue working in the gang-prevention network in some capacity (an interest developed by working with John Garcia last summer) upon graduation. She hopes to begin graduate school in Fall 2012. Krissia both presented her poster and talked about her experiences as an ICPSR intern on her campus.

Tommaso Pavone spent several months working for ICPSR as a NACJD temp this spring and has now headed for Chicago. He has chosen to defer his admission to the UM Law School for a year, during which he will complete a Masters in Social Science degree at the University of Chicago. Tom presented his work at the Midwest Political Science Association meetings and another paper of his was chosen as a winner in the ICPSR Undergraduate Paper Competition.

NACJD releases Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI) data

The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) is pleased to announce the release of the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI) Multi-site Impact Evaluation, 2004-2007 [United States] data collection, ICPSR Study 27101.

The SVORI impact evaluation data collection for both SVORI and non-SVORI participants consisted of four waves of in-person, computer-assisted interviews, oral swab drug tests conducted in conjunction with two of the follow-up interviews, arrest data obtained from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and administrative records data obtained from state correctional and juvenile justice agencies. Between 2004 and 2007, data were collected on 2,391 individuals including 1,697 adult males, 357 adult females, and 337 juvenile males.

The data are restricted from general dissemination. Users interested in obtaining these data must complete a Restricted Data Use Agreement form and specify the reasons for the request. Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the data and to protect respondent confidentiality, users interested in accessing certain data must complete an Application for Use of ICPSR Data Enclave. Please see the Web page for ICPSR Study 27101 for additional information about access and availability and a more detailed study description.

The SVORI impact evaluation project was supported by Grant No. 2004-RE-CX-0002 awarded by the National Institute of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, United States Department of Justice. The data are being made available through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data under the auspices of the National Institute of Justice Data Resources Program, which was established to ensure the preservation and availability of research and evaluation data collected through NIJ-funded research.

Pop Center welcomes new faculty this month

We welcome new Pop Center faculty Kellan Baker, Kerith Conron, Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen, Jennifer Mitty, and Stewart Landers.

Kellan Baker is the Senior Policy Associate at the National Coalition for LGBT Health, where he develops and implements the Coalition's broad range of LGBT health policy efforts. His work includes fighting for LGBT inclusion under the Affordable Care Act, enhancing LGBT representation in federal public health initiatives like Healthy People 2020, improving federal and state data collection on LGBT health and health disparities, and pursuing advocacy with policymakers across the federal government. Prior to joining the Coalition, he spent several years in Moscow, Russia, where he co-founded a group that advocates for quality healthcare for transgender people in the former Soviet Union and worked with Special Olympics Russia. He spent the summer of 2009 on break from the Coalition in the White House, where he interned for the Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy. In addition to his work for the Coalition, Kellan is pursuing dual Masters Degrees (MPH/MA) in Global Public Health Policy and International Development at George Washington University, where he is a member of the Delta Omega Public Health Honors Society. He graduated from Swarthmore College with high honors in astrophysics and Russian.

Kerith Conron is an Associate Research Scientist at the Institute on Urban Health, Northeastern University. In 2007, she earned her doctorate from the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Kerith’s research focuses on LGBT health disparities and measurement, childhood victimization, and mental health. She has worked with the LGBT community for the last decade, as an epidemiologist, an evaluator, and a trainer. Kerith served on the first Steering Committee of the National Coalition for LGBT Health and has participated in several national scientific workgroups and panels on LGBT measurement. As Principal Investigator of the Gender Measures Project, she has conducted one of few transgender measurement research studies in the country. Her publications appear in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Public Heath Reports, Psychological Medicine, and the American Journal of Public Health.

Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen is a Professor and Director of the Institute for Multigenerational Health at the School of Social Work, University of Washington. Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen’s research focuses on aging, health disparities and caregiving in marginalized communities. Currently, as the Principal Investigator of Caregiving and Aging with Pride (RO1), she is leading the first national study on health disparities of LGBT elders and their caregivers. Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen is the author of three books and has received several awards for advancing gerontological and health research and education. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, received the Outstanding Research Award by the Society for Social Work and Research and was selected as a Hartford Faculty Mentor and Scholar. Locally, nationally and internationally, Dr. Fredriksen-Goldsen provides consultation and training on effectively serving elders and their families and conducting research within marginalized communities. She received her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California at Berkeley.

Stewart Landers is a senior consultant at John Snow, Inc. (JSI), based in Boston, Massachusetts, with 25 years of experience working on issues related to health care reform, chronic disease, wellness, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse treatment and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) health. From 2007-2009, Mr. Landers served as Senior Program Director at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. In the area of LGBT Health, Mr. Landers has conducted health needs assessments of the LGBT population in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Santa Clara County, CA. He is part of a national “umbrella” group of individuals who plan health summits for the LGBT and Intersex communities across the United States. Mr. Landers has worked on HIV prevention projects and needs assessments in New Hampshire, Santa Clara County, CA, Minnesota and Massachusetts. In Rhode Island, he provided technical assistance to a program offering HIV testing and other STD screening at a bathhouse in Providence. Mr. Landers provides evaluation expertise across a variety of disciplines. He is currently evaluating a multi-pronged effort to reduce childhood obesity in Rochester, New York. In 2006, he completed a collaborative research study with Harvard Medical School to evaluate a quality improvement collaborative for Ryan White Modernization Act Part A grantees to improve the quality of HIV/AIDS services provided across networks of care. Beyond his work at JSI, Mr. Landers is as associate editor at the American Journal of Public Health, focusing on LGBT Health and teaches Evaluation of Health Services at Tufts University. He received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1982 and a Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978.

Jennifer Mitty is a research scientist at The Fenway Institute and Director of the Infectious Disease Fellowship Training Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She is an infectious disease specialist who has been caring for individuals with HIV/AIDS for over 15 years. She has a research interest in medication adherence and linkage to care among hard to reach HIV-infected individuals. Most recently, she has been involved in looking at the impact of substance abuse treatment on HIV-related health outcomes. In addition to her work with HIV infected patients, she is also interested in investigating the impact of substance use on biomedical prevention strategies for high risk MSM.

Eight new Data-Driven Learning Guides available

ICPSR’s *Online Learning Center* is pleased to announce the release of eight new Data-Driven Learning Guides (DDLGs).

Designed by teaching faculty and geared toward building data literacy in undergraduate classrooms, DDLGs are set up as lesson plans and contain a description and examples of the focal concept, the data needed for empirical application using basic statistical techniques, a guide to interpretation, and a summary of the exercise.

The new DDLGS are:

OLC now offers *more than 40 DDLGs*, and more are under development. We appreciate any feedback or suggestions for new topics for DDLGs.
